Travel Crafts?

Hello Everyone!  I hope you had a happy Easter for those of you who celebrate it.  I ate so much candy yesterday I still feel like I'm going to puke, but other than that, it was a fun weekend with the family.

I'll be traveling to Texas later this week to visit my cousin, who just recently bought a house in Houston!  I am very excited to see him but am in a dither as to a portable craft to bring along with me for the plane ride.  I'm a sewer, primarily, and I can't really tote my machine along.  I like to make cards too but with airport security being what it is, the supplies I would need might be a hassle to get on board (scissors, glue, etc).  And, I don't knit.  What is a crafter to do?

Heather Bailey has this tutorial on how to make yo yos - never done it before, but if I cut out the circles ahead of time I would be able to make a bunch of them.

Maybe now is the time to take up embroidery?

Any suggestions?  Let me know!!

  2. You could always take an embroidery project and add it to something later? Like a handmade applique? enjoy your tip!

  3. I usually bring a book for a plane ride. But, since I really don't like to fly I mostly have a few drinks and talk to the strange next to me. But, only if they feel like talking.

  4. I'm thinking I might just end up bringing a book...I'm leaving right from work so I'll probably be tired. I do have another longer trip coming up in May that I'll brainstorm ideas for though! Thanks for the input.

linda barker (on a uk tv show) made those, sewed them together and then stapled them to the back of a frame in a crazy pattern. I hope you can see that link cuz it looked amazing! You could get going on those bad boys and make a massive frame with them!

  8. I like to take some crochet with me when traveling. I have some plastic crochet hooks so they can go on the plain.

  10. Hi Emma, I'm following now. Love the embroidered yo-yo's. I take kid's blunt nose scissors on the plane and have for several transcontinental flights over a few years. I don't announce it, but they go thru x-ray machines and haven't been pulled yet.

  13. I usually crochet when I travel, but I'm not sure if the hooks would be ok in the cabin on a plane. maybe the very chunky plastic ones?

I like the yo you idea, I've been wanting to make a bunch for a cushion I saw on design sponge but haven't got around to it yet

  14. Great post....your right! ITs hard to find crafts these days to take on plane trips, especially since everything seems to be considered a weapon!
